Handpan for Kids
The handpan for kids puts the handpan’s unique sound in your child’s hands with a 45 cm (18 in) shell suited to their reach. Your child will play with their fingers and won’t need sheet music because every note will sound in tune from the very first minute, allowing them to improvise alone or with others while the instrument rests on their lap or a stand. Most of these models are also available in your choice of 440 Hz or 432 Hz tuning.

What distinguishes a handpan designed for a child from an adult model?

The 45 cm (18 in) handpans are the only ones offered by the Instruments du Monde store in this collection, whereas adult-size handpans typically measure 50 to 55 cm (20 to 22 in) in diameter.
A standard-size handpan extends beyond the knees of a 6-year-old, making it prone to slipping and its weight quickly uncomfortable. Even when placed on a stand, this instrument forces short arms to stretch to reach the notes around the edge. With a properly sized instrument, however, you will find that your child can reach every note from the same position and feels much less intimidated by the instrument, allowing them to keep enjoying playing. Similarly, avoid choosing a model that is too large in the belief that your child will grow into it: if their arms cannot reach every note, their enjoyment during those first few months will suffer directly.
Weight matters, too. For a child, it is best to choose an instrument weighing less than 3.5 kg (7 lb 11.5 oz) whenever possible, since a lighter model is easier to hold and you can move it from room to room or store it in its case after a session. In every other respect, a children’s handpan remains a genuine steel handpan: the difference lies in its size, not the nature of the instrument.
What does a child gain from playing the handpan?
A single scale brings together all the instrument’s notes, allowing a child to make music from day one. No wrong notes will discourage them, and you will not have to tell them they are making a mistake, so your child will gain confidence very quickly.
It is not uncommon to find that playing the instrument develops coordination between both hands and fine motor skills, while also improving a child’s sense of rhythm. The sustained sound of each note also encourages your child to listen before striking the next one. As a result, a restless child may become gentle with the instrument within just a few minutes.
Compared with the piano or guitar, this instrument is limited to a single scale, and learning it is less structured. If your child has become discouraged by another instrument, the handpan could restore their desire to play.
