Is a 10-Note Handpan Suitable for a Beginner?

Yes, this is a format that can be ideal for beginners. In general, a 9- or 10-note instrument is the best choice for a first handpan, and many players continue using this format for years. In fact, most handpans have 9 or 10 notes on the upper shell, including the ding. Its fixed scale prevents you from playing wrong notes, and it generally has no notes on the bottom shell, unlike instruments with 12 to 17 notes.
However, it is less intuitive to play than a smaller model, and improvisation becomes more difficult as the number of notes increases. It is also perfectly suitable for ambitious beginners, as well as intermediate and advanced players.
What Difference Does the Tenth Note Make on a Handpan?
A 10-note handpan lets you add a scale degree without changing the way you play. The nine-note version covers one octave of a diatonic scale, while the ten-note version adds an extra scale degree, allowing your ascending runs to extend beyond the octave. This gives you more possibilities for playing and composing.
For example, a look at the D Kurd scale clearly illustrates the difference: on the nine-note version, it ranges from the low D to the high A, while the ten-note version adds a high C above the octave formed by the two As. This C allows you to play much richer melodies. Keep in mind that the added note is not always a higher note, as its position depends entirely on the tuning: it is generally placed above the octave or below the root note. That is why you should examine the tuning of the instrument you are interested in before purchasing it, since the listed number of notes does not tell the whole story. You will also gain access to wider intervals, such as ninths and tenths, and be able to create new combinations of two or three notes played simultaneously.
