What Does 440 Hz Mean on a Handpan?

This is the frequency of the reference note, the A above middle C, which vibrates exactly 440 times per second. Frequency is measured in hertz and indicates how many times a note vibrates per second: the higher the frequency, the higher the pitch. This is why a 440 Hz handpan sounds slightly higher than a 432 Hz model.
This A is called A4 in international pitch notation and La3 in French notation. The maker begins by tuning the instrument to this reference note and then uses it to calculate all the other notes on the handpan, including the bottom notes if it has any.
Who Should Choose a Handpan Tuned to 440 Hz?
A 440 Hz handpan is the right choice if you want to play with other musicians, whether they play guitar, piano, cello, or sing. The same applies if you want to record your music, take lessons, join handpan sessions, or play along with backing tracks. Most online tutorials and lessons use 440 hertz, as do the backing tracks you can easily play along with, whereas a 432 Hz handpan will sound slightly out of tune with them.
If you are not yet sure how you will use your handpan, it is best to choose 440 hertz so you do not limit your options. Some players choose 432 hertz because of its promises, only to discover a few months later that they cannot play with their friends, while the reverse almost never happens. In addition, 440 hertz is the most common reference pitch among makers and on the secondhand market, which should make a future resale easier. However, if you play alone for meditation, you are free to choose either one.
The Instruments du Monde store also lets you choose the frequency when placing your order through an option available on most products in this collection.
