Explore the American roots of the Zen drum

The tongue drum, also called zen drum, originated in the ancient cultures of the Americas. At that time, solid wood slit drums such as the Aztec teponaztli were the kings of instruments, used in sacred and religious rituals. Years later, Jim Doble revolutionized the design to create the Whale Drum, focusing on gas cylinders instead of wood. Inspired by the Swiss handpan, Dennis Havlena created a modern tongue drum in 2007. It appeals to musicians in particular because it is more accessible and less expensive. This instrument combines the adaptation of an ancient instrument with contemporary musical sensibilities. Let yourself be charmed by the rich musical heritage of the tongue drum.
