What diameter qualifies as a large Tibetan singing bowl?

A Tibetan singing bowl is considered large starting at approximately 8 in (20 cm) in diameter. A bowl under 4.75 in (12 cm) is considered small, while medium-sized bowls range from 4.75 to 8 in (12 to 20 cm). However, there is no single rule, and some workshops classify their instruments by weight rather than diameter.
Very large bowls generally measure 16 to 20 in (40 to 50 cm) and can reach up to 24 in (60 cm) for the largest models, while our selection goes up to 20 in (50 cm) in diameter. Some of our models are available in several sizes, so you will need to select your desired diameter when placing your order.
Why does a large Tibetan singing bowl resonate longer and at a lower pitch?
A large singing bowl resonates longer and at a lower pitch because the pitch of its sounds depends on its diameter, shape, mass, and wall thickness. As a general reference, the fundamental frequency of a bowl measuring 9.5 to 12 in (24 to 30 cm) is usually between 80 and 180 hertz, while a bowl measuring nearly 20 in (50 cm) has been measured at 52 hertz.
In addition, large, heavy bowls produce fuller sounds with a longer sustain. A large bowl will also begin resonating more quickly and sustain that resonance longer when you make it sing by rubbing its rim. You will then feel the sound fill the room and its vibrations travel through your body, especially if you play near your chest. Among bowls of similar diameter, a thick-walled bowl may have a higher pitch, while a bowl with a thinner rim and a rounded bottom may have a lower pitch despite weighing less. A very large bowl may also sound quieter than a smaller one because its sound seems to travel downward toward the floor, which is why practitioners call them grounding bowls. Finally, some of our models can be selected by note.
