Tibetan Singing Bowl in C
A Tibetan singing bowl tuned to C produces the first note in our selection—the note that begins the best-known musical scale. This collection features metal and quartz crystal instruments, all tuned to this note. You can play your bowl on its own, use it to accompany your voice, or later pair it with other notes to build your own ensemble, one bowl at a time.

At what frequency does a Tibetan singing bowl in C vibrate?

A Tibetan singing bowl in C vibrates at approximately 131, 262, or 523 hertz, depending on whether it produces a low, middle, or high C, since the frequency doubles with each octave. These values represent the center of the note when the reference pitch is set to A = 440 Hz, not the measurement of a specific model. This center serves as a reference point, and the instrument will not necessarily match it down to the hertz. Metal bowls sold by note are most commonly found around low C, while crystal bowls range from low C to high C. Some of these crystal bowls also let you choose between two reference frequencies: 440 or 432 hertz.
However, this does not mean that the instrument vibrates at 432 hertz. This is the reference pitch, meaning that A shifts from 440 to 432 hertz, lowering every note. As a result, middle C shifts from approximately 261.6 to approximately 256.9 hertz. This difference is less than one-third of a semitone, and it applies across all octaves.
What do you hear when a Tibetan singing bowl tuned to C resonates?
You will hear a main note, the fundamental, which is the bowl's lowest note and the one that gives it its name. It is surrounded by other sounds that shape its timbre, meaning that your bowl will produce more than just a C.
In a handmade instrument, these overtones are not exact multiples of the main note because of variations in wall thickness, and one of them may be the sound that seems loudest to the ear. You can also use a felt mallet to bring out the lower frequencies or a hard stick to emphasize the higher frequencies, but this will not change your bowl's C note.
