Why Is D Kurd the Most Recommended Tuning for a First Handpan?

You will find more lessons, tutorials, and sheet music for D Kurd than for other tunings. Most learning platforms therefore begin with this tuning when teaching you how to play. D minor is also the most common key when groups of handpan players get together to play. Finally, many models are available in D Kurd, giving you a wide selection of designs.
Are a D Kurd Handpan and a D Minor Handpan the Same Thing?
Not exactly. They generally refer to the same instrument under two different names. In fact, D minor is the name of the key, while D Kurd is the name the handpan community gives to a specific arrangement of notes within that key. That is why a listing that simply says “D Minor” without further details usually refers to D Kurd.
However, other D minor handpan scales exist, including Celtic and Integral. Names also vary by manufacturer, and some present D minor as a scale distinct from D Kurd. To make the right choice, check the sequence of notes before purchasing your instrument instead of relying solely on its name.
