Are you thinking about buying a singing bowl, or do you already own one and want to understand the physical, mental, and spiritual benefits you may get from this kind of instrument? Are the virtues and benefits attributed to Tibetan bowls real, and have they been studied by science? How can you get the most out of the healing properties often associated with singing bowls?

I’ve been using Tibetan bowls regularly for their various benefits for over 10 years now, and I’ve had plenty of opportunities to notice their positive effects on me personally. So, I’d like to share my firsthand experience on this fascinating and mysterious topic: what this Asian instrument can truly bring into your life.

Tibetan bowls offer many benefits and virtues that have been validated by studies, such as pain relief, mood enhancement, and improved sleep. Other phenomena such as chakra harmonization and purification of negative energies are also highlighted, but are not based on science.

By reading our full report below, you will finally know:

  • Whether Tibetan singing bowls really offer benefits
  • Which benefits are backed by science
  • The virtues of this instrument that remain more debatable
  • How to take advantage of all these healing properties

You’ll soon see everything a Tibetan singing bowl can do to improve your living environment and support your personal growth.

Let’s take a look at all the benefits of a Tibetan singing bowl.

Is there really any benefit to using a Tibetan bowl?

It’s true that at first glance, there’s reason to be skeptical. How can a small metal object shaped like a bowl have medicinal properties? Is it all just a sales pitch from Tibetan bowl manufacturers and sellers looking to move more products? It’s also true that you’ll find every possible claim about singing bowls online, so it’s wise to approach the topic with a healthy dose of caution.

It’s important to be clear: Tibetan bowls belong to the realm of complementary wellness tools, not primary medical treatments. In other words, they cannot replace care for serious conditions such as cancer or Alzheimer’s disease. If you’re facing such a challenge, our goal is simply to set realistic expectations about this gentle-sounding instrument. If anyone tries to sell you a singing bowl as a way to cure cancer or any other serious illness, walk away immediately.

Does this mean Tibetan bowls are useless? Far from it! In reality, this instrument can be used to improve your quality of life or to support you through a difficult time, such as a serious illness, but always alongside treatment approved by medical professionals. In this case, we refer to music therapy, sound therapy, or sonology. These approaches all use sound, music, and instruments to support care and calm the mind. They’re serious modalities whose benefits have been explored in multiple scientific studies, including research on animals. So, by using a Tibetan singing bowl, you can tap into the advantages of these practices—and we’ll get into that right away.

The benefits of singing bowls validated by scientific studies

Although few studies have focused on music therapy, and even fewer specifically on the benefits of Tibetan bowls for humans, several advantages are attributed to this Asian musical object.

Promote sleep with Tibetan bowls

Listening to relaxing or soothing sounds greatly contributes to improving sleep quality, making it easier to fall asleep and helping to prevent insomnia. It can also reduce nighttime awakenings, so you’re less likely to wake up feeling exhausted. This has been supported by scientific research for decades, and the key point is that the effect has been observed across all age groups. As a result, playing your Tibetan bowl for a few minutes before bedtime is an excellent way to prepare for a good night’s sleep.

Reducing tension, a benefit attributed to singing bowls

For a long time, it was widely believed that Tibetan singing bowls had a calming, relaxing effect, even before researchers truly studied the topic. On September 30, 2016, a group of professors and doctors from the University of San Diego in the United States published a study titled “Effects of Singing Bowl Sound Meditation on Mood, Tension, and Well-Being”. As part of this study, 62 people aged between 21 and 71 took part in an experiment involving meditation, relaxation, and sound sessions using Tibetan bowls.

The findings were very positive across all the parameters tested, but especially for tension. According to the study: “The tension subscale, in particular, showed highly significant effects for participants after meditation, confirming the hypothesis that sound meditation increases feelings of relaxation and decreases feelings of stress.” So, if you have high blood pressure or simply want to unwind, using a Tibetan bowl—gently striking it with its mallet or striker—is entirely appropriate.

It’s worth noting that these findings also support an earlier study, published on May 1, 2014, titled “Physiological and psychological effects of a Himalayan singing bowl in meditation practice: a quantitative analysis.” Here too, the results on 51 individuals showed a clear decrease in tension when a Tibetan bowl was used during a meditation session compared to the same session without the use of this instrument.

Improving your mood with a Tibetan bowl

Several studies have found a significant improvement in mood when using a Tibetan bowl. In other words, it can help you get through difficult life events such as a breakup, the loss of a loved one, hospitalization, the onset of illness, or any negative experience that may bring you down. In this context, Tibetan singing bowls may also help stabilize your temperament, helping you avoid mood swings—those sudden, rapid changes in behavior often associated with deteriorating mental well-being. To learn more, read my article on the links between Tibetan singing bowls, depression, and stress.

Singing bowls to reduce anxiety

It’s now well established that music you personally experience as relaxing can lower cortisol levels, a hormone linked to stress. So if you enjoy the sounds and vibrations of Tibetan singing bowls—which is probably the case if you’re reading this—your brain may also release endorphins, natural chemicals that help soothe the body, calm the mind, and reduce the perception of pain. In short, Tibetan singing bowls reduce stress and can help you relax as soon as you hear their sound. Several studies have also noted the value of music-based approaches in hospitals and palliative care settings.

Relieve your pain with this musical instrument

Along the same lines, using a Tibetan bowl can help relieve pain in general, notably through the production of endorphins. Studies looking at the topic have noted that people may need fewer chemical substances, such as morphine or anti-inflammatory drugs, when an instrument is used as part of a calming, supportive approach. This has also been observed with chronic pain, including back pain, migraines, and osteoarthritis-related pain. In addition, people who use Tibetan bowls may see their pain tolerance increase, which can also help reduce reliance on medication.

On June 20, 2008, a team of German scientists published a study titled “Singing Quartz Bowl Therapy for Spinal Pain,” which aimed to determine whether the sound or vibrations of singing bowls could relieve chronic back pain in 54 people. The report concluded that “pain intensity was significantly lower” for the group that received singing-bowl treatment. However, the study could not determine whether this relief was due to the instrument or a placebo effect, so some uncertainty remains. In any case, it appears that people who benefited from this special treatment experienced less pain than before, which is what matters most.

Using a musical instrument like a Tibetan bowl can also improve the overall well-being of people living with schizophrenia, as indicated by a clinical trial conducted in 2005. Children and adolescents with autism also have something to gain from music therapy, since benefits have been observed such as improved vocabulary, better attention during tasks, and stronger communication. A thesis from the University of Medicine in Nice, France, on the use of music therapy for people with Alzheimer’s disease presented on May 16, 2019, draws the following conclusion: “Music therapy appears to be an effective therapy for behavioral disorders in people with dementia syndromes.” It also emphasized that this practice is inexpensive and can be implemented quite easily if you’re willing to put it into place. This is only the beginning, and it’s very likely that future studies will show that playing or listening to a musical instrument is beneficial for many other conditions.

An instrument to help awaken musical awareness in children and infants

Music and sounds have always had the power to calm children. Clinical trials have shown that premature babies become calmer in this context, and they may also gain weight more easily. Musical awakening is also a rich activity that can help young children improve their motor skills while discovering the world around them. Like the classic xylophone, it’s entirely possible to give a child a set of Tibetan bowls, which require a specific technique to make them sing. There is therefore a real benefit to introducing instruments into a child’s world from an early age.

What are the more controversial virtues of Tibetan singing bowls?

Other benefits are often attributed to Tibetan bowls besides the ones we mentioned above. These claims have never been validated by any scientific study. That doesn’t necessarily mean they’re made up by singing bowl sellers. Rather, it may simply be that certain phenomena experienced by practitioners remain unexplained for now. Perhaps in a few years, researchers will be able to confirm or refute these benefits.

Balancing the chakras with Tibetan bowls

According to Tibetan tradition, singing bowls made from an alloy of seven metals are linked to the seven major chakras of the human body. These chakras are points located in different parts of the body where a certain form of energy is said to circulate. For example, the crown chakra, also known as Sahasrara, is located at the top of the skull, while Muladhara, the root chakra, is located at the perineum. Using Tibetan bowls in this context is said to harmonize the different chakras, helping you find balance and reconnect with yourself—often the goal for anyone working with these energy centers. While some people claim to feel their chakras, there is no scientific proof of their existence.

Consequently, the benefits of Tibetan bowls depend mainly on your sensitivity to this subject. If you are open to the idea that chakras exist, or at least could exist, then this instrument can really add value to your daily life. If, on the other hand, you are resistant or unwilling to believe in them, then disregard this benefit.

Singing bowls to protect against negative energies

In the same vein as chakras, some users of Tibetan bowls use them to drive negative energies out of a place or room in order to “purify” it. Traditionally, a smaller bowl with a higher-pitched sound is preferred for this practice. The idea is to make the bowl sing in the four corners of a room to help dispel negativity that has built up for various reasons. My conclusion is the same as with chakras: it all depends on your sensitivity to the subject because, for the moment, there is no scientific evidence to support it.

In the field of energy healing, the same applies to the practice of lithotherapy, which involves the use of stones and crystals for healing purposes. Some practitioners say you can recharge a lithotherapy stone or crystal by placing it next to or in the center of your Tibetan bowl, then playing it with the provided mallet or striker. These minerals are thought to gradually lose their power when worn as a bracelet or ring, for example.

Enter a meditative state more easily with a Tibetan singing bowl

Although no studies have been conducted on the subject, I can personally attest that this small Tibetan handicraft can work wonders when it comes to entering a meditative or contemplative state. The sound of the Tibetan bowl can help you reach a higher level of concentration so you can meditate more deeply. If you practice yoga or any spiritual discipline, get yourself a singing bowl—you’ll feel a huge difference!

A general improvement in the immune system through the Tibetan bowl

Many singing bowl players claim that they get sick much less often after using the instrument regularly. They conclude that their immune systems have become stronger, that they can eliminate toxins more effectively, and even that muscle regeneration may be taking place.

Fighting addiction with a musical instrument

Research is currently underway to determine whether music therapy, and therefore the use of musical instruments, could have a positive influence on people suffering from various addictions (alcohol, drugs, gambling, etc.). For now, nothing is certain, even if the University of Nice in France published a promising paper on the use of instruments in addiction treatment in December 2020. If this describes your situation, you don’t have much to lose by trying this type of sound-based approach.

How can you take advantage of the benefits and powers offered by this musical instrument?

Now that you know all the benefits offered by Tibetan bowls, it’s only natural to wonder how to use them to experience these effects. There are two main techniques: meditation and sound massage. The first involves trying to reach a contemplative state by using the instrument like a mantra, while the second involves using vibrations to “massage” another person, much like a professional massage therapist would do with their hands.

We discuss these two techniques in detail in our article on how to heal with a Tibetan bowl. For a first approach, watch this video, which serves as an introduction to sound massage.

Take advantage of the properties of the Tibetan bowl to increase your well-being

Because the Tibetan singing bowl is an ancient sound instrument, it’s often credited with benefits that may sometimes sound questionable. So it’s understandable to doubt what you hear. However, thanks to everything you’ve read in this article, you now know the benefits associated with this fascinating object and can decide for yourself whether this instrument can help you improve your daily life.

That said, finding a reputable shop that offers a wide range of authentic Tibetan singing bowls for different uses isn’t easy. To solve that problem, Instruments du Monde offers more than 200 high-quality singing bowls, including this model designed for therapeutic use.
