What makes one Tibetan singing bowl less expensive than another?

Generally, the size and weight of the metal affect the price of these instruments. Larger bowls require more material, more time spent hammering, and more precise control of their shape and thickness. Smaller bowls are the most affordable simply because they contain less alloy. Price also depends on the intended use, the bowl’s quality, and how it was made.
A hand-hammered bowl is the product of an increasingly rare craft. Hammering, shaping, and tuning can keep artisans busy for hours or even several days. However, some bowls sold as handmade have dents added afterward to imitate hammer marks. Clear information about how a bowl was made will help you judge it.
By contrast, a cast bowl is made by pouring molten alloy directly into a single-use mold. This process requires much less manual work, allowing for a lower price. Cast bowls are usually made of brass, then polished, given a patina, or engraved.
Decoration also affects the price. Engravings of mantras and Buddhist symbols, which are highly valued in Nepal, can be done by hand and take several hours without changing the bowl’s sound. Buddhist tradition holds that the sound carries the message. Likewise, small black spots or color variations from the manufacturing process generally don’t affect the sound. A bowl sold individually with a recording of its sound would also cost more because recording and listing each bowl online takes time. Antique bowls remain rare and sought after by collectors, which explains their cost.
Is an affordable Tibetan singing bowl a genuine Tibetan singing bowl?
There is no official definition of an authentic Tibetan singing bowl. Some consider only bowls more than 50 to 60 years old—very rare and expensive bowls—to be genuine. Others accept only bowls hammered in Tibet, while still others look for bowls made of seven metals. A bowl that meets none of these definitions isn’t necessarily a fake or a poor-quality piece. Without an official standard, authenticity is assessed through several clues: how the bowl was made, its patina, its composition, and its provenance. No single clue is enough, and neither a “seven metals” claim nor a beautiful engraving alone guarantees a bowl’s quality.
As for provenance, a genuine bowl comes from the Himalayan region or neighboring Buddhist regions such as Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan, or India.
