How are designs engraved on a Tibetan singing bowl?

For etching, artists draw the design by hand using black wax. Once the wax has fully hardened, the bowl is immersed in an acid bath that eats away at the exposed areas, leaving the wax-protected design in relief. This bath is completed in successive, carefully monitored stages. A dark patina is then applied to give the design the color and contrast needed to make it clearly visible.
Chisel engraving involves carving the design with a burin and pointed tool using a small hammer, either freehand or with a template. This much longer and more precise process produces lines you can feel beneath your fingers and makes it possible to depict a Buddha or a deity such as Tara inside a Tibetan singing bowl.
Finally, computer-controlled laser engraving makes it possible to reproduce the same design on every piece.
Typically, a main design engraved on the bottom of the bowl is accompanied by secondary designs on the inner or outer wall, or even the base. It may depict a deity or a Flower of Life, and an Om syllable is sometimes engraved on the front or inside. The artisans of Patan, Nepal, particularly those of the Newar tradition, are renowned for this craftsmanship.
What do the symbols engraved on a Tibetan singing bowl mean?
The Om Mani Padme Hum mantra is one of the most commonly engraved designs; Mani means “jewel,” and Padme means “lotus.” Tradition associates this mantra with compassion. The syllable Om, or Aum, represents the primal sound in Hindu tradition. Its three sounds—A, U, and M—refer to wakefulness, dreaming, and deep sleep.
You will often find a double dorje engraved on the bottom, an important symbol in Buddhism. It represents strength and stability, as well as wisdom united with compassion. You may also find the eight auspicious symbols: the conch shell, the lotus, the endless knot, the parasol, the two golden fish, the Dharma wheel, the treasure vase, and the victory banner. The lotus evokes purity and enlightenment because it rises from muddy water without becoming soiled, while the endless knot symbolizes the interconnectedness of all things. The Buddha’s eyes embody clear vision and enlightenment, while the Flower of Life, made up of interlocking circles, is interpreted as a symbol of creation and harmony.
