Handpan
The handpan is an intuitive percussion instrument played with the hands by gently striking its metal shell, which holds several tuned notes. It was created as an alternative to the Hang, a very similar instrument invented in 2000 by the Swiss company PANArt, which patented its design to limit production.

How to Choose the Right Handpan for You
To choose the right handpan, you need to consider several criteria, particularly the number of notes, its scale, the material it is made from, and its tuning frequency. To help you make your choice, we will cover each of these criteria in turn:
- Number of notes: The number of notes determines the handpan’s musical potential. In other words, the more notes your future handpan has, the greater its creative possibilities. Between 9 and 12 notes is a good range for beginners. Models with fewer notes are fairly limited, while those with more are often recommended for percussionists who are already proficient with this metal instrument.
- Scale: A handpan’s notes are set during manufacturing and cannot be changed afterward. You must therefore choose them carefully so that they sound harmonious when played together or in sequence. This is why manufacturers select a scale when crafting a handpan. Many scales are available, and we recommend D Kurd, which sounds particularly harmonious on this percussion instrument.
- Material: A handpan can be made from nitrided steel, stainless steel, or Ember steel. Nitrided steel requires more maintenance and provides a fast, percussive playing experience. Stainless steel is more forgiving when it comes to maintenance and produces notes that sustain longer when played with the same striking force. It is therefore ideal for calm, meditative playing. Ember steel produces notes that sustain even longer than stainless steel and is considered a premium handpan material.
- Tuning frequency: The two main tuning frequencies are 440 and 432 Hz. The worldwide standard is 440 Hz, while some believe that 432 Hz is more closely aligned with nature and living things. Choose 440 Hz if you want to play with other musicians because an instrument tuned to 440 Hz cannot be played in concert with one tuned to 432 Hz. However, some players claim that 432 Hz allows them to relax or meditate more effectively with the instrument. The choice is yours.

What is a handpan?

The handpan is a percussion instrument in the idiophone family, a category of instruments whose sound comes from the material the instrument is made from.
The handpan vaguely resembles a flying saucer about 20–24 in (50–60 cm) in diameter. It consists of two convex metal shells that are joined—more accurately, pressed—together. Elliptical areas (called “tonefields”) are created on these shells through a long, meticulous hammering process. Each tonefield corresponds to a different musical note.
The note at the very top is called the “ding,” while the cavity underneath is known as the “gu.” To play the handpan, you strike or rub the elliptical tonefields with your hands. The inside of the instrument is completely hollow, creating a resonance chamber. The handpan is played either resting on your thighs or on a tripod stand.
Don’t confuse the handpan with a closely related instrument: the tongue drum. While a tongue drum is made by cutting simple tongue-shaped slits into the metal, a handpan is formed by hammering the shells for hours until the desired sound is achieved. As a result, making a handpan is far more demanding for the maker than producing a tongue drum, which explains the price difference between the two instruments.
What does the “Hang drum” sound like?
The handpan, sometimes called the “Hang drum”, produces soft, relaxing sounds that are often described as spacious or even lunar—tones you won’t quite find anywhere else. Here’s a video of a talented handpan player so you can hear what’s possible with this instrument.
