Tibetan Singing Bowl in F
The Tibetan singing bowl tuned to F produces the fourth note of the scale, positioned in the middle, with a warm, full-bodied sound that lingers in the air. Our selection includes metal models adorned with hand-engraved designs and quartz crystal models, whose F note sounds clearer. You can play your instrument on its own, then later pair it with A and C to form a chord.

At What Frequency Does the F of a Tibetan Singing Bowl Vibrate?

The F of a Tibetan singing bowl vibrates at 349.23 hertz in the middle register. The frequency of the octave below is 174.61 hertz, while that of the octave above is 698.46 hertz. You can even find some metal bowls tuned to a very low F at 87.31 hertz.
These figures are calculated rather than measured, since they can be derived from a reference note set to 440 hertz. For comparison, metal bowls sold as F have been measured at frequencies ranging from 169 to 178 hertz. If you’re interested in purchasing one of the crystal bowls from our selection, many allow you to choose between 440 and 432 hertz. This number does not indicate the frequency of F. It indicates the reference pitch—the A note to which all the other notes are tuned. When this reference pitch is lowered from 440 to 432 hertz, the middle F drops from approximately 349 to approximately 343 hertz, while the lowest F drops from 87.31 to 85.72 hertz.
This represents less than one-third of a half step. Therefore, each of these bowls can still be described as being in F. To express the same interval across all octaves, it must be measured in cents rather than hertz.
Which Bowls Should You Play with a Tibetan Singing Bowl in F?
If you already own a Tibetan singing bowl in F, first pair it with bowls tuned to A and C. This will create an F major chord with a warm, open sound. It is an ideal starting point if you want to begin playing several bowls at the same time.
You can also combine F bowls from different octaves, since the note remains the same while the frequency doubles. However, you’ll need to pay closer attention to E because it is only a half step away from F. It is therefore best to avoid pairing an E that is slightly too high with an F that is slightly too low. Finally, you’ll need to select all your bowls with the same reference pitch, either 440 or 432 hertz, to ensure that your set sounds in tune.
